There is often a bit of confusion with these terms and it is not clear what is it a Spumante (sparkling wine) and what a Prosecco. Some believe that Prosecco is a sparkling brut, meaning a dry sparkling wine. Others believe it is a particular variety of wine, but actually, the main difference between a sparkling wine and Prosecco is the production area.
So what is a Spumante? In general terms we can define a Spumante by its production of Spuma (foam coming from the sparkles) due to the presence of carbon dioxide, and it is produced in any area using Italian Charmat method or the Classic method. The taste can be more or less sweet.
Prosecco, instead, is a DOC wine (Italian certification of the controlled origin of a product) produced from a specific variety of grape, called Glera, present in the area of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (eg. Conegliano, Valdobbiadene, Asolo Hills etc.) and produced using the Charmat method.
Ultimately, the difference between Spumante and Prosecco is all here, the area of origin and the kind of grapes used, just like we cannot define Mac as a PC.
